January 2026 Monthly Garden Guide
Episode Transcript
Hey there, gardeners! Welcome back to the Keep Growing podcast, straight from Bob's Market and Greenhouses in the heart of the Mid-Ohio Valley. It's January 10th, 2026, and even if it's chilly out there (we're talking those classic winter temps hovering around the 30s, with maybe a light flurry or two still in the forecast), we're keeping things warm and cozy indoors while dreaming of spring blooms.
I'm your host, John Morgan, and whew—I'm thrilled to be back after that nasty bug knocked me out last month. Nothing like a little forced rest to appreciate how tough our plants are through the cold! But enough about me coughing through December—let's get into the good stuff. The new year is here, so here's a fun, quick rundown of the top January garden tasks to keep your green thumb humming even when the ground's still frozen.
First off, grow some fresh herbs in containers—parsley is a superstar right now. Nothing beats snipping your own for that winter soup, am I right?
Houseplant love is huge this month. Prune them regularly, pinch back new growth for bushier plants, rotate for even sun, and give them a spa treatment: Remove the top 1/4 inch of old soil and top-dress with fresh potting mix.
Don't forget the birds—put out water, seeds, and suet. They're counting on us during these cold snaps!
Shop early for seeds from catalogs and stores—the best varieties go fast! Test last year's leftovers on damp paper towels to see what still sprouts. And take inventory of your preserved goodies in the freezer or root cellar—it'll guide your seed order perfectly.
There you go, friends—a handful of January favorites to tide us over till the ground thaws. Swing by Bob's for seeds, potting mix, and all the cozy indoor gardening supplies—we're stocked and ready to help you … keep growing!
Until next time, check out this year’s theme in its full glory.
