7.11.26 - Cultivate26
Episode Transcript
Welcome back to the Keep Growing Podcast. I’m your host, John Morgan, coming to you from right here in ... a hotel room in Columbus, OH a bit more on that later. This week we’re looking at gardening tasks and conditions from July 11th through the 17th, 2026. July is rolling along hot and humid, and our gardens are feeling it — so let’s talk about what we need to watch and what opportunities are right in front of us.
First, the weather. At the time of recording, a flash flood watch remains in effect for much of the region. Heavy showers and isolated strong to potentially severe thunderstorms could bring localized flash flooding through Sunday morning. If you’re out in the garden this weekend, keep one eye on the sky and have a quick plan to secure tools or move anything that could wash around.
Things turn drier as we head into the work week, but the trade-off is that it’s going to get hotter by midweek. Classic mid-July weather in the valley — heat, humidity, and the need to stay on top of plant stress.
With those rising temperatures, monitoring for heat stress is one of the most important things we can do this week. Water early in the morning so your plants get a deep drink before the sun and heat really ramp up. Early watering also reduces evaporation loss and helps keep foliage drier overnight, which cuts down on disease pressure.
For tender plants — think young transplants, certain annual flowers, or even some vegetables that are looking a little peaked — consider throwing some shade cloth over them during the hottest part of the afternoon. A little temporary relief can prevent wilting, leaf scorch, and the kind of stress that stalls growth or reduces production. Walk your beds in the evening and note which plants are struggling; those are the ones that will benefit most from a bit of afternoon shade.
Here’s a bright spot on the calendar: Tuesday, July 14th is the New Moon, and many gardeners consider it prime planting time. If you’ve got room and want to keep the harvests coming, this is an excellent window to sow more bush beans. For those of us in Zone 7, it’s also a great time to tuck in some okra — that “Zone 7 bonus” crop that absolutely thrives in our summer heat and humidity. Okra loves warm soil and will keep producing pods well into the fall as long as you stay on top of picking.
Heat-loving flowers are another smart choice right now. Zinnias, cosmos, marigolds, or sunflowers sown or transplanted under the new moon can give you a strong late-summer show and plenty of pollinator traffic. The soil is warm, the days are long, and the plants will take off quickly.
Don’t forget your containers and hanging baskets — they’re working overtime in this heat. These plantings dry out fast, often needing water every single day (sometimes more than once if they’re in full sun or catching wind). Make a quick daily check part of your routine and water thoroughly until you see it running out the drainage holes.
Fertilize them weekly with a balanced liquid fertilizer to replace the nutrients that leach away with frequent watering. Well-fed containers will keep blooming and looking full instead of turning tired and sparse. If you’re stopping by Bob’s Market this week, we’ve got good options for potting mixes, liquid feeds, and heat-tolerant varieties that are already used to our conditions.
Before we close out this week’s episode, I want to let you know that this weekend I’m heading to Columbus for Cultivate’26, the big green-industry event put on by AmericanHort at the Greater Columbus Convention Center (July 11–14). It’s the premier gathering for growers, retailers, breeders, landscapers, and garden pros from across the country — packed with new plant varieties, product debuts, educational sessions, and plenty of networking.
I’ll be on the ground taking it all in and posting fresh updates on the Bob’s Market blog each evening. Expect quick recaps of standout sessions, first looks at exciting new plants and tools, trend notes, and anything that feels especially relevant for our Mid-Ohio Valley gardens and customers.
Check back Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings for the latest straight from the show floor. I’m excited to bring the highlights home to you — let’s see what’s new!
In the meantime, head over to bobsmarket.com for the show notes from this episode and all the latest garden content. While you’re there, consider joining our VIP Club — you’ll get text notifications for sales, events, and timely garden advisories (scout’s honor, no spam). I personally handle a lot of those messages and always appreciate hearing from fellow gardeners in the valley.
Thanks so much for listening. Keep an eye on the heat, give those plants a little extra morning care, and keep growing. This is John Morgan with the Keep Growing Podcast, signing off from the Mid-Ohio Valley. I’ll catch you next week!
