[Upbeat intro music fades in]
Hey everybody, welcome back to the Keep Growing Podcast – your weekly guide to gardening right here in the Mid-Ohio Valley. I’m your host, John Morgan, coming to you from the Bob’s HQ where the soil is rich and the growing season is finally kicking into high gear.
We’ve got a beautiful stretch of spring ahead of us, but we’re also watching some tricky weather this week. Let’s dig right in!
First things first – if you haven’t been to Bob’s Market yet this weekend, you’re missing out on our Annual Mother’s Day Weekend Sale!
Right now through Sunday evening, May 10th, you can grab 10-inch flowering hanging baskets and regular 32-count bedding flats – two for $37. That’s a huge savings off the regular $20.99 each price. You can mix and match these. So you can do two different baskets, two different flats, a flat and a basket. … You can even make a mix of the eight four packs in a 32-count flat. The possibilities are endless!
On Saturday, that’s today! (sorry if you’re listening late), every Bob’s Market location is running hourly drawings for a free hanging basket, and they’ll crown one lucky winner at the end of the day with a $100 Bob’s Market Gift Card at each of our store locations.
And don’t forget the online drawing too! You’ve still got time to register for your chance at another $100 gift card. Entries close Wednesday, May 13th at noon, and I’ll draw the winner live on Bob’s LIVE this Thursday at 2 PM. Head to bobsmarket.com right now and get your name in the hat.
Moms love flowers – and gardeners love a great deal. Win-win!
[Main Gardening Topics]
Alright, let’s talk about what you should be doing in the garden this week.
This is prime time for that big summer color explosion. Go ahead and direct-seed zinnias, marigolds, cosmos, and sunflowers. These heat-loving annuals will take off quickly now that the soil is warming up. Sow them where you want them to bloom – full sun, good drainage, and keep the seed bed moist until they pop up. You’ll be thanking yourself in July and August when the butterflies and pollinators are going crazy.
While you’ve got the seed packets out, put in some Lima beans and bush beans. Both do great when direct-seeded now. Bush beans will give you a nice steady harvest without needing trellises, and Limas love the warmer days ahead. Plant them about 2–3 inches apart in rows, and make sure the soil is nice and loose.
And don’t forget – it’s pepper planting week! Whether you’re setting out transplants you started earlier or picking up some nice big ones from Bob’s, get those peppers in the ground. They love the heat and will appreciate the longer, warmer days we’re heading into.
One more quick lunar note for you: Saturday, May 9th is the Last Quarter Moon. That’s perfect barren-time energy – ideal for turning your compost pile. Give it a good flip, add some water if it’s dry, and let those microbes get back to work turning kitchen scraps and yard waste into garden gold. Your future tomatoes will thank you.
[Weather Outlook]
Now, let’s talk weather – because this week has some important headlines for gardeners.
Rain Chances
Starting Sunday night, a cold front is going to move through and bring us a very good chance of a wetting rain. We’re still in drought territory, so any rain we get right now is extremely welcome. Another weaker system looks to slide through midweek with additional chances for showers and isolated storms. No severe weather is expected at this time, but we’ll keep an eye on the models.
Frost & Freeze Watch
Tuesday morning is the one to watch. A colder air mass is settling in with clear skies and calm winds – perfect conditions for frost, especially in the northeast mountains. Some lower-elevation spots outside the mountains could also see patchy frost. Cover those tender new plantings if you’re in a susceptible area. Better safe than sorry!
Overall, we’ll have cooler temperatures early in the week before things moderate again. Use those cooler days to get the rest of your warm-season crops planted while the soil is still workable.
[Closing]
That’s a wrap for this week on the Keep Growing Podcast. Get out there, take advantage of the Mother’s Day Weekend sale, get those summer seeds and peppers in the ground, turn that compost, and keep a close eye on the forecast Tuesday morning.
If you have questions about your garden, drop them in the comments, send me a message, or come see us at Bob’s Market.
Until next week, keep your garden green, your hands dirty, and keep growing!
