Outdoor Kitchens

In our last two blog posts we took a look at patios and pergolas.  It’s only natural to take a look at uses for this great combo.  Sure there’s the classics like adding a hot tub or a simple table and chairs, but today there are appliances and electronics available to turn your backyard paradise into a true extension of your house.  Perhaps the most popular option is building a fully functioning outdoor kitchen.  This isn’t your parent’s old, busted grill.

First, let’s take a look at the usual kitchen appliances.  There are a number of appliances specifically designed for outdoor use.  Refrigerators, propane stoves, grill inserts, storage options, and even the kitchen sink all have options available that can be incorporated into an outdoor kitchen island or countertop.

Next, here are some options for extending the season.  For spring and fall, there are ton of heating options to turn you outdoor kitchen into a toasty retreat.  Building a fireplace is the classic option, but there’s also electric, infrared heaters and propane option available.  There’s freestanding heaters, ceiling and wall mount heaters, and also small tabletop heaters.

Finally, let’s geek out with electronics.  When it comes to electronics and home automation, your outdoor living area doesn’t need to be left out.  From LED lighting options to weatherproof, outdoor-rated TVs, there are tons of gadgets for your outdoor living space.  Bluetooth speakers disguised as rocks make a great option for rocking out. …. Just be sure to turn them off when you’re done.  I’ve heard stories of folks unknowingly blasting their neighborhood with tunes in the middle of the night when their phone connected from the house.

Today we have the tools to create a space that is a true extension of your home.Often patios are limited to a single use and often neglected.Creating an outdoor kitchen area with seating and some of the indoor creature comforts can help create a space that is used more frequently.
