Garden Planning Tips

In the middle of winter there’s not much to do out in the garden, but we can always plan for the next growing season.  Here are a few simple tools you can use for planning.

Keep a Garden Journal

I wrote about keeping a garden journal a few years ago.  I still do that, but I also use a couple of spreadsheets on my phone to track crops during the growing season.  Specifically, I use an app called AirTables to keep things organized.  (Coincidentally, I also use it to organize our quarterly marketing schedules.)

Take Photos

I take tons of photos.  Many of them end up online, but some are more for documenting the “when’s, where’s, and how’s” of my garden.  This fall I added a drone to my photography equipment.  I can’t share the images because I’m not yet licensed for commercial drone use (working on it), but the photos of my own property have helped me plan the future layout of my gardens and landscaping.

Go Old School

A couple of weeks ago I received the 2021 Burpee catalog in the mail.  I have fond memories of setting down with grandma to order seeds.  Now I order them online but scrolling through a website just isn’t the same as being able to dog ear a page, add notes, and circle possibilities.

Take a Walk

On a nice day, head out to the garden.  It seems like there’s always new projects to discover.  This past weekend, I headed out to my “meadow garden” to make plans for the upcoming summer.
